“The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence.” Pope Francis, Lumen Fidei
The purpose of Light the World! is to immerse youth in how the Catholic faith engages and impacts wider society through both theological texts and lived models of faithful excellence, so as to allow their faith to permeate all they do. Light the World! is both an instrument of the Spirit for formation in faith, and a vehicle for the Church itself to be transformed by hearing the voices of its youth.
Each day of Light the World! explores a different career, vocation, or course of study. The hope is that with a more insensitive look at the relation of faith and science, art, sports, business, and politics that participants will see how their spiritual life should influence their careers and other aspects of their daily lives.
God at Work in My Life
Where each day of Light the World! is spent engaging deep theological thought with guest speakers and excursions, the evenings are spent on campus with a turn to the more personal reflection. Students will hear from CUA undergraduate counselors on experiences from their own relationship with Christ, gather to share in small groups, and have time for different prayer forms each night.
After a week with Light the World! we believe that the students, their parents, undergraduate counselors, this University, and our Church will be changed. Our hope is that a week spent dedicated to exploring the Catholic faith through theological text, models of faithful excellence, and cultivating virtuous friendships inspires all those involved to go forth and Light the World! with the joy of Christ.
Light the World! is proof that there is no age requirement for seeking Truth and integrating into our lives. Light the World! showed me that the human thirst for Truth can be ignited at any point in life. – Casey, Counselor and Senior Theology Major at The Catholic University of America
This summer institute is made possible through the generous funding of a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. For this reason, the cost of the institute is only $300 and scholarships are available upon request.
Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family — J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli — through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly & Company. The Endowment exists to support the causes of religion, education, and community development. Lilly Endowment’s religion grantmaking is designed to deepen and enrich the religious lives of American Christians. It does this largely through initiatives to enhance and sustain the quality of ministry in American congregations and parishes.
